New LNG-fuelled PCTC Delivered

On January 31 2023, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) took delivery of Jasmine Leader, a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) capable of navigating oceans with only LNG as the ship’s main fuel. The vessel is NYK’s third LNG-fuelled PCTC and the first of the four to be delivered from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co., Ltd and will be managed by NYK Shipmanagement PTE LTD (NYKSM).

The Vessel is designed and built as a dual fuel pure car Truck carrier (PCTC) intended for worldwide service, capable of carrying cars, vans, buses, freight containers loaded on MAFI trailers, as well as IMDG packaged DG cargo. One of the main features of the vessel is being built with a Hybrid control system with battery power which prevents blackout and also supports Bow thruster operation.

Jasmine Leader is named after the jasmine flower, which is a symbol of beauty and known for its rich fragrance. Desiring to realize and pass on a healthy global environment through environment-friendly transportation, NYK is naming its LNG-fuelled PCTCs after flowers.

NYK has set a long-term target of net-zero emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG) by 2050 for the NYK Group’s oceangoing businesses and aims at launching zero-emission ships that run on low-environmental-load marine fuels, such as ammonia or hydrogen, in the future. NYK is positioning LNG, a low-carbon marine fuel, as a bridge-solution until future zero-emission ships are realized. As part of the NYK Group, NYKSM will continue to strive for optimal balance between the environment and the economy to contribute to a sustainable society.
